can be made safer and more satisfying. This Special Woman can help a laboring woman have a birth that truly goes beyond the limits of ordinary experience.
–Paulina Perez
Hello expectant parents! My name is London King and I'm
a professional labor assisstant trained by Doulas of North America (DONA). My job as a labor supporter is to help validate
the experience of pregnancy and childbirth. The journey to motherhood includes pregnancy and birth, and the pregnant woman
needs those around her who can suppport and affirm her ability to give birth. This is so important because the mother's
attitude toward and expectations of birth affect how she labors and gives birth. In order to deal with birth pain, women need
to feel nurtured and protected. A caring heart is the most essential labor support tool one can possess but there are many
other techniques, strategies and "tricks of the trade" to help a laboring woman mediate pain while increasing her
self-confidence and deal with the sensations involved in the birth process. I help to empower the mother and her partner by
educating them on the birthing process, thereby relieving them of the fear of the unknown.

Birth is an important emotional experience for a woman and the care that she receives during labor and
birth can influence not only her life but also her mothering abilities. It cannot be emphasized enough that the presence of
a continuous supportive
caregiver for every mother is associated with the return of her control over her own birth-giving. It is exciting to appreciate
how this uniquely humane approach of nurturing touch and emotional support has significantly reduced major complications of
labor and permanently increased a woman's self-esteem.

Studies show that when a doula is present at birth, women experience shorter labor, fewer medical interventions and
cesareans and healthier babies. Recent evidence also suggests that when a doula provides labor support, women are more satisfied
with their experience and the mother-infant interactions are enhanced.
