dads and a doula

baby_pix/023_23.JPG

The doula's role at the birth does not replace or diminish the father's involvement. I feel that it enhances the father's ability to be more present for his partner. Through the encouragement and loving support of the doula, the father is more relaxed and at ease during the birthing process. The father's calm presence is much appreciated by the laboring mother and can be sensed through gentle touch, which relaxes the mother and can help expedite labor. I empower the mother's partner by informing them of the changes and transitions during labor thereby reducing fear and panic. I remind them that birth is a natural process that women are experiencing all over the world this very minute.

* a note for fathers

The father's presence and loving support in childbirth is comforting and reassuring. The love he shares with the mother and his child, his need to nurture and protect his family, are priceless gifts that only he can provide. With her partner and a doula at birth, a mother can have the best of both worlds: her partner's loving care and attention and the doula's expertise and guidance in childbirth.
